Can you legally copy DVDs?

    The sad fact is that no DVD copying software can make copies of copy-protected DVDs without breaking the encryption code used to protect them. And this is, of course, explicitly verboten in the DMCA.

    So while we are legally allowed to make backup copies of DVDs we have purchased we're not legally allowed to bypass the encryption code on commercial DVDs to make those copies. We're hamstrung. It's complete nonsense.

    So there's really no point in spending alot money on these DVD copying software packages when you can find a free one to download that copies only unprotected DVDs.
