I have a feeling that some system dlls were replaced with the fab installation but I'm not in the mood to try and track em all down. I know once I put fab 3 on, my nero burning engine seemed to take a crap. I could write dvd data discs but couldn't use it for either shrink or dvdfab. Reminds me of my undergrad days of ripping to divx 4. Remember that....rip / encode to avi / audio synch / ect ect.... must have tried out hundredes of apps that promised to speed that 4 hour process along. I think I averaged a reformat bi-monthly back then. As far as the compatibility with the sony....there really aren't a whole lot of options. I'm pretty sure I tried the few available. It's a dual layer dual format but I mostly stick with the 4.7 dvd-r. Actually, I usually stick with whatever bestbuy is giving away cheap when I happen to head over there. In my case it all started with what seemed like a hardware problem - my DVDRW started acting wonky with DVDs (but perfectly fine with data, audio, CD-R, CD-RW, whatever). I ended up throwing a "test" hard drive in my system, with a separate installation of WinXP, and go figure, the damned thing works. I've tried removing the device and every device driver associated with it, removing/reinstalling every installation of DVD Shrink, dissecting the registry, etc,etc. I've continually postponed the OS Rebuild by hooking the other hard drive up when I want to rip a few DVDs. It's lame, and a hassle, but I am not motivated enough to wipe things out and start from scratch. Kinda hoping another version of DVD Shrink comes along. I've come across a couple different problems that maybe someone could shed a little light on. My beloved dvd shrink worked perfectly to get me going a few months back. Some of the newer discs of course would run into copy protections. I went with dvdfab platinum to handle the problem cases. However, ever since upgrading the fab platinum to ver. 3, I can no longer get my shrink to work right. Just about every disc I try, old or new, refuses to open. It has also rendered older versions of dvdfab gold mode completely useless. It wouldn't be such a problem except for dvdfab 3.x having a mid-range sucess rate for me. Particularly the customized disc mode can be a little hit or miss. I also have a sony laptop running shrink as well as a 2.9x version of dvdfab gold version. Same setup I had previously on my desktop. Everything works well just as it did before. The sony does a decent enough job but for some reason the discs I burn aren't compatible with some players out there. They load just fine on my $50 phillips but other players don't seem to recognize them. It's a little annoying (and embarassing) to hand my sister a dvd and hear all about how it didn't load on here player. I've tried the usual...uninstalling dvdfab, dvdshrink and nero as well. Did my best to cleanout the registry and get rid of whatever remnants I came across. Went back to the old config but the problems persists. If possible I would like to get my puter operational again. I'm sure I wouldn't have any clue which dlls might be lingering about and causing problems. I'm also pretty fresh off a reformat and not looking forward to that 2 hour chore again. It's much more common to experience this problem: 1) I successfully index/preview the disc 2) I make the changes to compression, I eliminate certain specials features 3) I click Backup. DVD Shrink hangs for about 6 seconds, then closes with no error message whatsoever. Once I've got it ripped, I would either need to generate an ISO file (something I used the ImgTool application for) that I could then burn, OR burn them directly to disc (something supported by the new version of ImgTool). Does DVD Fab only rip the disk in an uncompressed state, then I would use DVD Shrink to reprocess those files so I can get everything down below 4.7GB? Sounds like an annoying extra step... Cyclic Redundancy Error usually means Dirty ,or Badly Scratched Damaged or bad pressed DVD.. DVD Fab Decrypter does well at ripping some discs like that to the HD and then use Shrink or Recode for compression but if it's a BADLY PRESSED Disc then it could just be a flaw from the manufacture that your burner is having issues with.... and since you have installed a Newer Burner it could be the firmware of the burner that needs updating.... HS07 is the latest Firmware for your burner.. I tested it under another login/profile on my machine to rule out some flukey application settings problem. I removed it for the dozenth time and installed a slightly older version, that failed in just the same way. Now I am going to try to rule out the OS itself by swapping in a spare hard drive with a clean load of XP. AnyDVD is installed but makes no difference. DVD FAB Express gave me 6gb worth of ripped data... VOB Blanker confuses the shit outta me and I coastered the first disc that I tried using those two products. I haven't yet tried Nero Recode or CloneDVD. It's extremely important to me that I maintain control over compression ratios - I do NOT want a "one click solution". Does Recode offer me this? I recall stumbling upon a directory of temp files for DVD Shrink, but I cannot remember the location on disk, and I don't know what file/folder names to search for. All I know is that those files were not under c:\program files\dvd shrink nor were they under c:\documents and settings\[myname]\local settings\application data. Shrink is no longer updated so any new movies will result in problems because of copy protection... Try running ANYDVD in the background while using DVD Shrink and that should solve the problem... Anydvd is a driver that runs in the background that removes the copy protection as it's being anylzed and shrunk.. I replaced it with a new LiteOn burner (SHM-165H6S, if it matters). Ever since then, DVD Shrink has been extremely problematic. It either craps out while doing the initial disk scan (yielding a Cyclic Redundancy Error), OR it lets me finish that step but when I click Backup, it momentarily hangs, then automatically dies (the process just disappears, no error message). ANY problems that I had received under the old drive were always attributable to a bad (scratched or cracked) source disk. Now I am lucky if I can back up 1 out of 4 disks that I try. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, uninstalling and reinstalling the drive, temporarily downgrading the driver, flashing the drive's firmware, etc. I've never used any other software as DVD Shrink has always met my needs perfectly. I would love to hear a) recommendations on getting operational with DVD Shrink again, b) any similar tales of woe, c) any suggestions on an alternate piece of software to try (ideally one that lets me pick and choose compression ratios for special features, reauthor, etc. help?
